Three painters, three visions of scenic––wild and urban––rivers and waterways and vessels that traverse them will be on exhibit at the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum September 20 – December 1, 2018.   The public is invited to the Artists’ Reception, which will be held on  Thursday, September 20th at 6 PM during the Opening Night of Visions of the Wild.

Channels: Warren Dreher

Warren Dreher has been exploring and painting scenic California waterways––from San Francisco Bay to the Sacramento Delta––for over 40 years. Usually painted on site, his intimate pastels and oils capture subtle atmospheres, dramatic sunsets, and the peaceful serenity of undisturbed channels that nature and man created to irrigate the Northern California landscape.

Portside: Linda Grebmeier

Linda Grebmeier has painted her observations of the Benicia Arsenal as seen from her balcony studio overlooking the Carquinez Strait for over two decades. Her series of works, entitled Cargo Ships, captures the grandeur and beauty of massive shipping vessels, illuminated by golden light, while docked at Port Benicia.

River City: Deanna Forbes

Deanna Forbes, looking out from her hilltop Vallejo studio overlooking the Napa River, recorded her observations of the ever-changing scenery, from season to season, day to night. The Napa Riverfront running through Vallejo as it opens to the Carquinez Straits, and on into San Pablo Bay and then San Francisco Bay is the subject of her large-scale oil paintings as well as intimate gouache studies. The work is a revelation of the convergence of waterways at the center of urban celebrations––from yesterday’s Mare Island ship christenings to today’s July 4th fireworks.

For Visions of the Wild 2018 Festival of Art and Culture, Guest Curator, Susan Schneider was invited by River Borne Curator, Kathryn Renfrow, and Executive Director, James Kern to bring contemporary art by these noted regional artists into several areas of the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum offering a fresh perspective on some of the museum’s collection.
